General Adviser

The role of a CARF adviser is varied and will depend on individual client circumstances, but may include some or all of the following:

  • Interviewing clients by phone or in person
  • Providing information from AdviserNet and other sources
  • Explaining the choices the client faces, and what these choices mean
  • Offering practical help to clients by writing letters, making phone calls and helping fill in forms
  • Performing calculations (for example, to assess entitlement to certain kinds of benefits)
  • Referring clients to other agencies if they are better placed to help
  • Writing up accurate client records on CASTLE (our client database)
  • Preventing future problems by identifying issues that affect a lot of clients – this is called social policy work

You don’t need specific qualifications or experience to become an adviser as full training will be given but it helps if you:

  • Are a good listener
  • Enjoy working in a team
  • Can read and write English, and do basic arithmetic
  • Are open–minded and don’t judge people or their circumstances
  • Enjoy helping all kinds of people
  • Are comfortable using a computer (or are prepared to learn)
  • Able to commit to at least two advice sessions per week (further attendance at training and meetings will be required from time to time)
The role of a general adviser can be challenging.  Many clients have complex problems that take time to help with.  Rest assured that you are not expected to know all the answers!  Our information system will contain everything you need to know and there is always someone in the bureau that you can go to for support or guidance.  All advice sessions have an experienced supervisor to support advisers in their work.
